PDK Taiwan Unites at the World’s Tallest Building

Members of PDK Taiwan gathered at Taipei 101, the world’s tallest building twice in 2005. The first event was the wedding reception of Annie Chou and Peter Wiens. PDK members from Shih Dung Elementary School (the bride), Dominican International School (the groom) and Taipei American School (friends) were among the guests who enjoyed a seven-course meal while toasting the newlyweds. Ralph Whalen, chapter president, spoke in Mandarin and English on behalf of Annie and Peter’s PDK friends.

The second visit to the 101 was to enjoy the sunset from the tallest building in the world on September 16. From the 89th floor the group marveled at the expanse of the city and then went outside to the 91st floor to watch the city wake up to another evening. “Our ears popped when we took the elevator to the observation deck at 37 mph in 39 seconds” stated one member. Everyone was amazed to see the 800-ton damping system ball that reduces the sway of the building by up to 40 percent and helps the building survive earthquakes above 7 on the Richter scale. The in addition to enjoying the building the group stopped at Page One, the best English bookstore in Taiwan, and finished the evening by sharing a meal at Macaroni Grill.
